The Narmer Palette: The Dawn of Egyptian History & The First Unification

  Dating back to approximately 3100 BCE, the Narmer Palette is universally recognized as one of the most critical historical documents ever discovered in Egypt. Unearthed at Hierakonpolis (Kom El-Ahmar) by British archaeologists James Quibell and Frederick Green, this dark green siltstone palette marks the official transition from prehistory to the Dynastic Era. ​Standing at nearly 64 centimeters tall, the ceremonial palette presents a vivid visual narrative of political unification. On the obverse side, King Narmer wears the tall White Crown of Upper Egypt (Hedjet) as he raises a macehead to strike a captive foe.
